The bags are packed, the itinerary set—you’re almost ready for that well-deserved getaway. But before you walk out the door, take a moment to secure the home you’re leaving behind. A quick pre-vacation checklist isn’t about adding to your to-do list; it’s about ensuring peace of mind, safeguarding your property, and even saving energy while you’re away.

  • Arm your security system and cameras
  • Set automatic lighting
  • Unplug televisions, computers, and other nonessential technology
  • Change thermostat settings to be more economical
  • Empty trash cans and garbage disposals
  • Alert a neighbor, friend, or police department that you will be away

SECURING YOUR SANCTUARY

A primary focus before any trip should be home security. This includes the obvious – locking all windows and doors and stowing away any easily visible valuables.

According to Ryan Geltz from Pro Security and Automation, the most overlooked step is often the most critical. “It’s very simple but often overlooked: testing your security system and making sure that it’s armed,” says Getz. Don’t assume it’s working; take the time to verify. Smart home devices can also play a significant role.

Getz says, “Many people have lighting on a timer, but today there’s more advanced systems and settings so they don’t come on at the exact same time every night.” He often reminds clients of the scene in Home Alone, when Marv and Harry are able to exactly predict when lights will click on in the neighborhood.

Similarly, holding your mail or asking a trusted neighbor to check in regularly can avoid obvious signs of being away.

APPLIANCE AND UTILITY PREP

To save energy and prevent potential issues, a sweep of your appliances and utilities is essential. Unplug electronics like TVs, computers, and small appliances that draw phantom power. Adjust your thermostat to an energy saving setting – there’s no need to cool or heat an empty house to your usual comfort level.

For longer trips, especially during colder months, consider turning off the main water supply to prevent freezes or leaks. A quick check of the garbage disposal (ensure it’s empty) and refrigerator (dispose of perishables) will also prevent unpleasant surprises upon your return.

TRAVEL WORRY-FREE

Before leaving, share your contact information and trip dates with a reliable neighbor who can keep an eye on things, or even ask the police to drive by occasionally while you are away. By taking a few moments to run through this pre-vacation checklist, you can enjoy your travels with the confidence that your home is secure and well-cared for.
