When the urge for something new, something different, and something exciting—or simply more functional!—hits, it can be a challenge to get to the next step. Sometimes, you just need a change—a breath of fresh air, so to speak. To refresh any room, regardless of location or use, try:
PAINT/COLOR
Do not underestimate the power of a coat of paint. Color is also a cost-effective way to play with trends. Bid farewell to 2024 Color of the Year, Peach Fuzz, for example, and welcome in 2025’s Mocha Mousse. Spend some time exploring color theories and families so you can find just the right fit.
LIGHTING
Another renovation powerhouse, lighting can be used to facilitate tasks and to set the right mood/ambience. Don’t be afraid to layer in lighting (e.g. bright overheads for tasks, sconces for elegance, lamps or chandeliers for lounging, etc.). Properly layering task, ambient, and accent lighting helps you achieve a far more dynamic, flexible, and functional space. The strategy is just as effective in the kitchen as it is the bathroom as it is the living room.
HARDWARE
Treat your space to a little upgrade in terms of hardware. In the kitchen, for example, new drawer pulls, cabinet door handles, and the like are a relatively inexpensive way to bring new life to your design. While it is traditional to choose matching hardware throughout a space, why not introduce a mix of styles, finishes, and materials? You will pull off a greater sense of depth and create visual interest.
STORAGE/ORGANIZATION
There isn’t a single space in the home that cannot benefit from upgraded storage and organization. This can be extensive, as in adding a butler’s pantry or utility room to your home. Or it can be much more simple; installing shelf organizers, for example, may not be a “WOW!” project, but you will notice—and enjoy—the results every time you use your kitchen, bath, pantry, garage, etc. Consider these techniques as the all-stars of a home renovation. They apply everywhere, and when done well, they produce phenomenal results.

The key to making any home renovation project a success is to start with a solid plan—and have the right team on your side. Many tasks are great for DIY, and the sense of accomplishment after, say, repainting a room is well worth your time.
