Trending alongside contemporary homes, where clean lines and functionality reign, are modern patios and outdoor kitchens where the home exterior and outdoor space work seamlessly together. Homeowners are falling in love with linear fireplaces and clean-line firepits to match the modern look of their property. These installed structures are not only an alternative to traditional stonework, they’re functional works of art.

The experts at FLATMADE Concrete love projects with features like these contemporary hearths. Owner Ben Driskell explains the draw of an outdoor fireplace, “The goal there is to get a unique, modern look beyond your standard brick or stone.”

For the clean lines and precision of a contemporary concrete patio, there’s no better contractor for the job. Driskell says most times, he works directly with the builder and designer of the home to plan around the specs of the fireplace they’ll be installing. For projects like this, they build a freestanding surround to fit around the fireplace itself, and sleeve in the gas lines for installation. For woodburning firepits and hearths, the heat can damage concrete, so they’ll install steel insulation or fire bricks. After that, there’s room to play with the form of the concrete.

“It ultimately becomes like a small piece of artwork, like molding something out of clay,” Driskell says. “Give me a picture or design, and I can look at it and find a way to make it. But the best part? Clients also trust me to create a one-of-a-kind design even without a photo or drawing.”

Although concrete has a reputation for being a cost-effective alternative to stone, it’s important to note that the specialized craftsmanship necessary to have a safe, functional, and stunning outdoor fireplace can often cost as much as traditional stone. Driskell says the real appeal for custom features is the final look and finish.

“It requires pouring with precision and the time to mold your fireplace in a way that’s prettier than natural stone. It takes time,” says Driskell.
